The process of achieving sexual maturity begins at conception and ends at death. It is influenced by biological maturation/aging, by progression through the socially‐defined stages of childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and later life, and by the person's relationships with others, including family members, intimate partners, and friends.   Although changes in sexual functioning throughout life are common, sexual interest and desire often continue until death. 

If you’ve never heard of HSDD, you’re not alone. One survey showed that 72% of premenopausal women weren’t aware of HSDD,* even though about 10% of premenopausal women in the US have it. 

Millions of women experience low desire associated with HSDD. While it’s normal to experience changes in your level of desire, an ongoing struggle to get in the mood can point to an imbalance of chemicals in your brain.  If you’re diagnosed with “acquired, generalized” HSDD, it means you haven’t had low sexual desire in the past, but you now have low sexual desire no matter the sexual activity, situation, or sexual partner. 

The good news is it can be treated! And when it is, women can get back to butterflies, goosebumps, and all the things that come with desire. 

Physical Causes of E.D. include Diabetes, Heart Disease, Obesity, Hormonal Changes including Low Testosterone, Perimenopause, Menopause, Tobacco Use, Alcohol Use, Certain Medications, and many more. 

Psychological Causes of E.D. include: Stress, Relationship Issues, Depression, Anxiety, past Trauma, and many more.

Labs will be ordered to rule out potential physical or hormonal issues. You will then have a follow-up visit to discuss the lab findings and determine the best treatment plan.
